Hike to Sunset Peak

Hey Hiking Pacers,

This week, we are hiking our way up to Sunset Peak. Hope to see you there!

Date and Time: Sunday, March 17, 2013, 7:00 AM sharp!!

Descriptions: 7.8 miles roundtrip with 1,300′ elevation gain/loss

Hiking Difficulty: Level 3 (details)

Meeting Location: Take the 210 to the Baseline Drive exit. Make a quick left, then right onto Padua Ave. Head north and make a right onto Mt. Baldy Road toward Mount Baldy Village, then turn left onto Glendora Ridge Road. Drive about 4.2 miles past Cow Canyon Saddle to a turnoff on the left hand side of the road. Park here and display your Adventure Pass.

*Remember there is no cell service in this area*

*An ADVENTURE PASS is required for each parked vehicle in this area. The National Forest Adventure Pass is a requirement by the US Forest Service for vehicles parked within certain recreation sites and areas in the forest. You can purchase either a day pass for $5.00 or an annual pass for $30.00. For more information on the Adventure Pass and where to purchase one, please visit the US Forest Service website.*

Hike to Orchard Camp via Old Mt. Wilson Trail

This week we are taking a familiar hike to Orchard Camp via Old Mt. Wilson Trail.  Hope you can join us!

Meeting Location: 168 E. Mira Monte Ave., Sierra Madre
Meet in front of the park located on Mira Monte Ave.
From the 210 freeway Arcadia, exit Santa Anita Avenue and go North.  Turn left (West) on Grand View.  From Grand View turn right (North) on Mountain Trail Ave.  Drive up a couple blocks to where the road ends but turns left as Mira Monte Ave.  Turn left here.  Immediately on your right is Mount Wilson Trail Drive.  Park in this area on the street, either on the lower end of Mount Wilson Trail Drive or on Mira Monte.  (Lon: 34.1694266 Lat: -118.0491448)

Hike to Smith Mountain

This week, we are hiking our way up to Smith Mountain. Hope to see you there!

Date and Time: Sunday, February 24, 2013, 7:00 AM sharp!!

Descriptions:
Both options reach Smith Mountain.
Short Option: 7 miles roundtrip with 1,821′ elevation gain/loss
Hiking Difficulty: Level 2.5 (details)

Long Option: 12 miles roundtrip with 2900′ elevation gain/loss
Hiking Difficulty: Level 4

Important Note:
In the last half mile to the top of Smith Mountain, you’ll be gaining about 800 feet and using your hands and knees in a few places. It’s steep, but there is a fairly apparent use-trail and many solid rocks to hang onto along the way. Just take your time and you’ll be fine…

Meeting Location:
From I-210, go North on Azusa Ave about 18.2 miles (6.2 miles past East Fork Road). (If you reach Coldbrook Campground, you have gone 0.3 miles too far.) At the trailhead is a pit toilet, a San Gabriel Wilderness sign and a forest info trail sign Bear Creek Tr No. 239W10. Lat: 34.287441, Lon: -117.842735

Stoddard Peak Hike

Meeting Location: From the 210 freeway, exit Baseline Road in Claremont. Turn left (west) on Baseline. In one block turn right (north) unto Padua Avenue. In 1.7 miles turn right onto Mt. Baldy Road (stop sign). After 2.4 miles you pass Shinn Road (an alternate route coming in from the right). Drive another 3.3 miles to the turn-off to Barrett-Stoddard Road on the right. You can park in the clearing. (Lat: 34.222849 Lon: -117.667624)

Garcia Trail Hike

Meeting Location: 18453 Sierra Madre Ave, Azusa, CA

From the I-210 Foothill Freeway, exit at Azusa Avenue.  Go north on Azusa Avenue (toward the mountains) and drive 1.7 miles to Sierra Madre Avenue.  Turn right (east), drive 1.1 mile to L.A. County Fire Station #97 – 18453 Sierra Madre Ave.  Park on the north side of the street in front of the houses or along MacNeal Drive south of the roundabout.  Walk up the driveway of the fire station.  Garcia Trail starts at the north end of the grass area.

Marshall Canyon Hike

Sorry for the confusion last week.  Even with the inconvenience, all the hikers still persevered and did a great hike!  You are all amazing.

Meeting Location: 6550 Stephens Ranch Rd, La Verne, CA 91750

From 210 freeway in La Verne, exit Fruit Street.  Turn north (toward the hills) and drive one block to Base Line Road.  Turn left (west) and drive 0.3 miles to Esperanza Drive (signal light).  Turn right (north) on Esperanza and travel about 1.7 miles.  The street bends left and becomes Golden Hills Road.  Proceed west on Golden Hills Road 0.3 miles to Stevens Ranch Road (signal light).  Turn right (north) on Stevens Ranch Road. You will pass the golf course and the road bends right (east).  At 1.0 mile you reach a fork in the road.  To the left is the Afflerbaugh and Paige Camps L.A. County Probation Department.  To the right is the entrance to Fred M. Palmer Equestrian Arena and Campground.  Stop about 100 feet before the fork and turn right into the large dirt parking lot.

Hoegees Camp Loop Hike

Hey Hiking Pacers,

Hope you all enjoyed a wonderful hike to the historical Rustic Canyon at Murphy Ranch. This week we are heading to the Big Santa Anita Canyon for two different hikes for your choosing; Hoegees Camp or Santa Anita Canyon.

Date and Time: Sunday, January 27, 2013, 7:00 AM sharp!!

Descriptions:
Hoegee’s Camp Loop – 5 miles roundtrip with 1,000’ elevation gain/loss.
Santa Anita Canyon Loop – 9.5 miles roundtrip with 1,600’ elevation gain/loss.
Both hikes are within the shady and lushly wooded Big Santa Anita Canyon!

Meeting Location:
Chantry Flats Recreation Area (34.196239,-118.022696) – Take the Santa Anita exit from the 210 toward the mountains (North). Keep on Santa Anita Canyon Road until it ends at Chantry Flats (about 5 miles). If you can find a parking spot here, snag it and display your Adventure Pass. We will meet in front of the bathrooms. Note: there is no cell service up there.

Adventure Pass Information: You must obtain an Adventure Pass for parking within the Angeles National Forest. Please plan accordingly and pick one up a few days prior to the hike ($5 for a day pass or $30 for an annual pass). San Jacinto Peak Hike

Hey Hiking Pacers,

This week, we are going to conquer one of the “Three Saints” — San Jacinto Peak!

Date and Time: Sunday, August 26, 2012, 7:00 AM sharp!!

Descriptions: 12 miles roundtrip with 4,800′ elevation gain/loss

Hiking Difficulty: Level 5 (details)

Meeting Location: From the 10 fwy heading east, drive south on the 243 from Banning 19 miles to the turnout for San Jacinto State Park. Turn left and follow the signs for Marion Mountain Campground. Park at the locked gate. (Lat:33.81454 Lon:-116.67948)

This will be a long drive (approx. 2 hours from Pasadena). Please plan accordingly.
Needless to say, this will be a very strenuous hike! Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, sun protection, and proper layers of clothing.
FYI: Just to reiterate, we are not doing this hike from the Tram.
